When all you have is bombs, everything starts to look like a target. And so after years of providing Libya’s dictator with the weapons he's been using against the people, all the international community – France, Britain and the United States – has to offer the people of Libya is more bombs, this time dropped from the sky rather than delivered in a box to Muammar Gaddafi's palace.
If the bitter lesson of Iraq and Afghanistan has taught us anything, though, it's that wars of liberation exact a deadly toll on those they purportedly liberate – and that democracy doesn't come on the back of a Tomahawk missile.
That's from Medea Benjamin and Charles Davis' "Cruise Missile Liberalism" (CounterPunch) and C.I. slid that over to me thinking I might find it interesting. I do.
I had an e-mail about my post yesterday which was just a letter against the bombing of Libya from A.N.S.W.E.R. I was told that I was the only one in the community who'd registered objection?
I don't know where that's coming from if you're really reading the community sites. There were calls yesterday -- at community sites -- for impeachment.
We are all opposed to it.
Now we didn't write about it at Third. Ava and C.I. had an idea for a second article and Jim wanted them to write it. They said maybe this Sunday.
Because last weekend was the anniversary of the Iraq War. The Iraq War that was being shoved to the side, as Ava and C.I. explained, "Media: Iraq as an aside".
They didn't want to lump in Libya for that reason. Too many others already were.
So that's why the focus was on Iraq at Third. And that's always going to be their main focus at Third. But Ava and C.I. did have plans for a Libya piece and may write it this weekend.
In terms of her own site, C.I. can't go off into Libya in the snapshot. It's the "Iraq snapshot." But if you read her morning entries, all this week she has been very clear that she is opposed to what is taking place. Rebecca, Elaine, Ruth, everyone has been clear. Marcia. I don't know where anyone could be confused.
But if anyone is, we all oppose Barack's bombing civilians. We oppose the death and destruction involved.
I'll go further and say if Barack and Momar want to grudge f**k, then have at it. Put them in a room together. Leave the innocent civilians out of it.
This is C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
