Flash from Mexico
The Toreadors have all turned gay
Roman whores have quit to seek a better way
Dope has undermined the morale of
The Buckingham Palace guards
Motorcycle gangs ride naked down Hollywood Boulevard
If through all the madness
We can stick together
We're safe and sound
The world's just inside out and upside down
That's "Safe & Sound" and written by Carly and Jacob Brackman. That's actually from the first Carly album I ever got. I was in college and my roommate and I went to Goodwill looking for a cheap sofa. We really didn't find any. But there was vinyl. I knew Carly from "Coming Around Again" and "You're So Vain." I knew a little more but those were the ones I knew really well. So there's this pile of vinyl and I see Carly's No Secrets. Wow. I grab it and convince my roommate that we need to buy a 'record player' at Goodwill which wasn't easy as everyone was doing CDs.
But I argued and won.
Then I get home and go to put it on and it doesn't sound like the song title on the album sleeve. I look closer. The album jacket was No Secrets. The record inside was Hot Cakes.
That's fine. I ended up falling in love with that album. "Grown Up" sounds so beautiful. I could listen to the piano and Carly's voice all day on that song. "Forever My Love" is fun to sing along to with the big swoops. "Think I'm Going To Have A Baby" was a favorite of mine for years (and now I'm going to have a baby!). There are just so many beautiful songs on that album. (Including the big hit "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" and the top ten hit "Mockingbird" which she sang with her then husband.)
So how did the world go all crazy today prompting the song above?
More crazy in the attempts to destroy Kathryn Bigelow.
The director was attacked by Debra Sweet, John McCain, Dianne Feinstein, Carl Levin and countless others today -- they want, the US Senators want, the studio to force Kathryn to re-edit her film. The government needs to mind its own damn business.
As distressing as that was, there was a good sign as well:
and C.I.'s "World Can't Wait goes completely nuts" kicking it off this morning. All of those were efforts to call out the attacks on Kathryn.
And what C.I. did this morning and the others tonight?
Reminds me of another song:
A grey day in February
Some flecks of white, but mostly brown
The world has tilted but
The world has expanded
And the world has turned
My world upside down
Cause the night is warm and all full of stars
There;s a wise woman
She;s moved right into my heart
She says: Look for the signs
You won´t have to look far
Lead with your spirit and follow
Follow your scar
That's written by Carly and it's called "Scar." It's on Bedroom Tapes. And while it captures my feeling of one-ness and admiration tonight, I need to give it (and Carly) credit for something more.
When I was raped, that was the song that really got me through some very, very awful days and even worse nights. I'd listen to that song especially in the waiting room before I'd go in for a therapy session. It was my crutch, it was my support, it was my inspiration. And it is a really great song.
If you've never heard it, I just checked and there is this one video of it on YouTube. See if you don't feel strengthened and enriched by the song as well.
This is C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
