Suzy Byrne (Yahoo News) reports that Ellen DeGeneres is thinking about quitting her long term talk show.
Porita de Rossi (Ellen’s wife) is supposed to love the idea. I think we all would.
First off, the talk show has gotten old. It is predictable and has no more surprises. Second, there was a time for the talk show. Ellen did a groundbreaking sitcom for ABC entitled Ellen. And homophobia killed it. The network killed with homophobia. After that, Ellen tried doing a sitcom for CBS which was worth watching but a little milder. It wasn’t a bomb but it did not set the ratings on fire. After that, and after comedy tours, Ellen did her daytime talk show. It established that America could handle an openly gay host.
Doing that day after day has got to wear on you. And Ellen’s made clear that she can do it and that viewers will tune in. She’s carried the torch further than almost anyone and she deserves credit for that but, goodness, let the woman have a life of her own. 15 years. That’s a long, long time. Every day for fifteen years, Monday through Friday, unless she was on vacation. I like Ellen’s stand up. I have the early 2000s two stand ups on DVD and I have the one from the 90s on CD. I love them. “What a stupid thing to say to me” always makes me laugh – long before she’s got the cop asking her why she has a blow up doll in the car. And I love the one about her godchild and how she says something like, “She’s six, or seven, or eight. She lives clear across town, who has that kind of time?” Ellen’s hilarious. She’s got more than enough money to just do a special from time to time and she should be able to do that.
Ellen has always struck me as someone who likes life. Johnny Carson never struck me that way. He stayed with The Tonight Show because he had nothing else and he didn’t like life.
Ellen has many things she can do besides a TV show. Like Jerry Seinfeld, she’s earned the right to relax and dabble. Do things she wants and not have to tape a show day after day after day.
This is C.I.'s "Iraq snapshot:"
Wednesday, December 12, 2018. Finally, someone to punish for the Iraq War -- no matter how innocent he actually is.
In 2003, the Iraq War -- or the latest phase -- started with the US-led invasion. This was followed by the occupation which continues to this day. In all this time, the US government has not punished anyone connected to the Iraq War.
The public has. They punished by Bully Boy Bush in 2008 by electing generic Democrat. Who was on the ticket didn't matter. The public had turned on the Iraq War and whomever got the nomination -- possibly even Zell Miller -- would hve gotten the presidency so long as they were a Democrat. It was a repudiation of Bully Boy Bush.
He started the illegal war and he had a lot of help.
Hillary Clinton was one of his helpers. A lot's forgotten today. That includes that Senator Bob Grahm urged her to read an intelligence finding -- that rejected the spin -- and that she refused to do so. This refusal to do due diligence -- a term attorney Clinton was very familiar with -- was ignored by her in real time and since -- she has repeatedly insisted that she looked at everything before voting. Liar. She went on to vote for the Iraq War -- the one thing that many still remember. Besides her refusal to read the intelligence finding Bob recommended, also forgotten is that it was not just a vote. Hillary also took the media to promote the Iraq War. It's a detail we're all supposed to forget and ignore.
Now she wasn't the only Democrat to do so. Every Democrat in the Senate at that time who has made it onto the Democratic presidential ticket also voted for the Iraq War -- John Kerry, John Edwards, Joe Biden . . .
But contrast her with Grabby Hands John Edwards. John has little to no integrity. Yet he managed to take accountability for his vote. He owned his vote for the illegal war and he apologized for it. As his then-wife Elizabeth Edwards noted (to Ruth Conniff of THE PROGRESSIVE, among others), Hillary did not. Hillary made excuses and minimized her actions.
The public punished her. In 2008, she lost the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. (I believe, had she been elected president in 2008, Iraq would not be an ongoing war. No one worshipped Hillary at that time. People were pragmatic about her. They would have held her feet to the fire. They wouldn't have looked the other way or held their tongues.) In 2016, her 'apology' had evolved from it was a mistake to vote for the war to it was a mistake because she believed Bully Boy Bush and she believed he would send enough troops (there are never enough troops for the War Hungry Hillary). In other words, "I made a mistake, because despite being in the US Senate, I was too damn stupid to know Bully Boy Bush was a liar. The whole Democratic Party already knew that but I was so damn stupid, I didn't know it. Vote for me!"
She lost the presidency.
There are one million and one conspiracies for why she lost. Then there is reality. Noting a Tweet Mike's noted earlier this week:

.
Exactly. The 2008 campaign presented Hillary as a fighter. The 2016 presented her as some credit agency collecting on a debt. She felt she was owed it and it came across. One of the worst presidential campaign slogans has to be "I'm With Her!"
As Ava and I noted November 9, 2016:
Contrast her "For anyone who's ever been counted out . . ." of 2008 with "I'm With Her" of this go round.
Were we trying to get into a club?
I'm with her?
In 2008, she was going to do something to help we the people, she was going to be a fighter for we the people.
Eight years later, I'm with her?
She ran her campaign as though the country owed her the presidency and all she had to do was show up for the coronation.
It was not a winning strategy. Possibly, having gotten the nomination in 2016, she thought she could escape her past and that it was all behind her. It wasn't. And how stupid of the party to have backed her in 2016. This is the woman who the 2008 battle for the nomination saw dubbed a racist -- both she and Bill were dubbed a racist. She was said to have called for the assassination of Barack at one point -- remember crazy Keith Olbermann and Marjorie Cohn and their breathless commentaries? So eight years later, this woman that a good portion of the party accepted was a racist was going to walk away with the presidency?
Nope.
Some like to insist she got the most popular votes?
And? What does that matter?
As a Democrat, are we supposed to look for the consolation prize because I sort of thought winning the election was what we were after.
The electoral college determines the outcome. That has always been the case. That is the system we have. Don't like it? I don't. And I've called it out repeatedly. I think it needs to be done away with. But there's no move to do away with it, no serious move so we had it and we'll have it in the future unless/until people wise up and say, "Let's elect by popular vote!"
Hillary lost.
Rahm's right, she was a lousy candidte. Donald Trump was a better candidate. (Which is why I was able to say in September 2016 that he would be the next president.)
Iraq is a big part of Hillary's legacy, of who she is. If she's stupid enough to run in 2020, she better be smart enough to figure out an explanation regarding Iraq -- and, no, Bully Boy Bush outsmarted me -- that's not going to cut it, not unless she's planning to run on the I Might Be Smarter Than A Turnip platform.
The Myth of St. Barack allowed Barack to take the 2008 nomination.
He utilized sexism against Hillary and so did his campaign staff (including the hideous groping of the cut out). The press helped him out with that. They also helped him lie about his Iraq War stance. Bill Clinton got it right, Barack's whole stance was a fairy tale.
Let's drop back to the January 9, 2008 snapshot when Matthew Rothschild, then still posing as a Democrat publicly, felt the need to lash out at Bill Clinton for rightly noting the little tyke's Iraq reputation was a "fairy tale:"
It is a "fairy tale." We've used that term and many others to describe the lies about 'anti-war' Bambi. Dropping back to the January 4, 2008 snapshot: " Obama tells Monica Davey (New York Times, July 26, 2004) he doesn't know how he would have voted if he'd been in the Senate. Two years later, he's telling David Remnick (The New Yorker) he doesn't know how he would have voted."
Davey:
He opposed the war in Iraq, and spoke against it during a rally in
Chicago in the fall of 2002. He said then that he saw no evidence that
Iraq had unconventional weapons that posed a threat, or of any link
between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda.
In a recent interview, he declined to criticize
Senators Kerry and Edwards for voting to authorize the war, although he
said he would not have done the same based on the information he had at
the time.
"But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence
reports," Mr. Obama said. "What would I have done? I don't know. What I
know is that from my vantage point the case was not made."
What would I have done?
I don't know.
That was a far cry from the pretense of big strong Barack. And it's what Elaine and I encountered when Barack was running for the Senate. I do get The Myth of St. Barack. Elaine and I were invited to a fundraiser. I made a point to travel to Chicago just for that fundraiser. We were going to max out with our donations. I was fully on board with an anti-war candidate -- even better, a bi-racial person. And bi-racial was how he was billed back then. Did that matter? Yes, it did. Our country has many bi and multi-racial people. The Census had been dragged and pulled into that reality only a little bit before. Democraphic studies would tell you that this too-often overlooked population was actually going to be the dominant one in the near future barring any kind of major trend reversal.
So we meet Barack, not yet in the US Senate, but having givn his 'anti-war' speech. And he tells us that if elected he's not going to push the end the war, that no longer matters, he explains, because the US is on the ground in Iraq.
Oh, it's on the ground in Iraq.
So it can't be reversed.
Well that certainly explains why he was unable to end the Iraq War, doesn't it? In 2011, he did a drawdown, not a withdrawal. The US military repeated referred to it as a drawdown because that's what it was. As Ted Koppel reported in real time, a large number of US troops would be moved over to neighboring Kuwait and a number of US troops (including Speical-Ops) would remain in Iraq after the drawdown.
Not only did they remain, he sent more in.
September 26, 2012, Tim Arango (NEW YORK TIMES) reported:
Iraq and the United States are negotiating an agreement that could result in the return of small units of American soldiers to Iraq on training missions. At the request of the Iraqi government, according to General Caslen, a unit of Army Special Operations soldiers was recently deployed to Iraq to advise on counterterrorism and help with intelligence.
This should have been big news. And after Tim's report, what happened? Three debates, three presidential debates. Not once did the moderator (or the idiot Mitt Romney) ever bring this up. Barack showed up at the debates with the lie that he ended the Iraq War. Along with having killed Osama Bin Laden (our mouser president!), his claim to fame was ending the Iraq War. Those October debates should have addressed what Tim Arango reported.
As John Stauber has noted repeatedly, Barack didn't push for any investigation into lying the American people into war.
Toxic Sludge Is Good For You! @JohnStauber
Toxic Sludge Is Good For You! @JohnStauber
.#Obama guaranteed it, no #Chilcot type investigation of the bipartisan stampede to war in Iraq:counterpunch.org/2016/07/07/whe…
He didn't put the illegal war on trial. He did nothing. (Nancy Pelosi didn't either, in fairness to Barack.)
But at last, someone might be put on trial for the Iraq War.
Who?
Julian Assange.
It's something Hillary, Barack and so many others can agree on. In fact, here's a Tweet remembering Hillary's desire to kill Julian:
Phillip Jahans @PhillipJahans 13 minutes ago
This from the woman who asked why the USA did not cruise missile an Embassy in the middle off London to kill Julian Assange.???
Stay out of it Hillary.. or stop bitching about others interfering in US politics..
Your credibility is long gone.
Julian Assange, for those who don't know, is the publisher of WIKILEAKS. He used to have some strong legal support but Michael Ratner died and George keeps Amal Clooney on a short leash.
Julian shamed the US government. How did he do that? By exposing the lies.
Dropping back to October 28, 2010:
Late Friday, WikiLeaks
released 391,832 US military documents on the Iraq War. The documents
-- US military field reports -- reveal torture and abuse and the
ignoring of both. They reveal ongoing policies passed from the Bush
administration onto the Obama one. They reveal that both administrations
ignored and ignore international laws and conventions on torture. They
reveal a much higher civilian death toll than was ever admitted to.
Calls are coming in from officials in many countries for an
investigation -- including from the UK, Norway and Israel -- and from
the United Nations High Commissoner for Human Rights and the United
Nations' Special Rapporteur on Torture. Russia's RIA Novsoti reports,
"Moscow has called on Washington to hold an investigation into mass
human rights violations committed by U.S. servicemen during the military
campaign in Iraq between 2004 and 2009, Russian Foreign Ministry
spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said on Thursday."
Today Robert Fisk appeared on Australia's Lateline (ABC) and, among other questions, host Tony Jones asked him what the documents released by WikiLeaks meant?
Robert Fisk: First of all, the individual items like, you
know, there are witnesses, American witnesses to torture, they didn't do
anything, that the Iraqis -- security authorities were torturing
Iraqis, that American air strikes were killing many civilians. We knew
about this, but it was always denied by the Americans. I was doing
stories years ago about Iraqis torturing Iraqis and the stories were
coming from American officers who were leaking them to me. But of
course every time I wrote them in the paper, the Americans denied that
it was true. I went to the scenes of US air strikes. They were
obviously limbs, hands, arms of children, babies, women, civilians, as
well sometimes as armed men, and we wrote about this. What the
WikiLeaks does is it proves beyond any doubt that what we reported was
correct and that what we were told by the American authorities was
mendacious, it was a lie. Just remember, the Americans now are saying,
"Shame upon WikiLeaks. It's endangering lives in Iraq." I mean,
invading Iraq endangered an awful lot of lives, didn't it? But, you
know, if these leaks, if these 400,000 documents had confirmed that the
Americans did stop torture, that they didn't kill civilians and air
strikes, you know, US generals' be hadning this stuff out free of charge
to journalists on the front steps of the Pentagon. It's the fact that
it proves how shameful our invasion and occupation of Iraq was that this
has come as such a blow to the United States -- and only, I might add,
to the West. You know, the reaction in the Arab world, when they looked
through all stuff in the Arabic language press, particularly in Baghdad,
was, "Well, so what's new? We knew all this. We were the people being
tortured. We were the people being bombed by the Americans." It's in
the West that we're saying, "My goodness! Is that the case? So the
generals lied." That's the big signifance at this particular point of
this. One bigger significance, I think -- and it was Al Jazeera who
actually picked this up -- was that this famous 242 message, which tells
US troops from higher headquarters, presumably Ricardo Sanchez when he
was a general in Baghdad, which syas, "If you see abuse taking place,
not by Americans, report it, but basically, just do nothing."
In the US, media coverage has tended to fall into two camps "no
big deal" and non-existant. For so-called 'independent' media, it has
pretty much been non-existant. Danny Schechter -- at ZNet, Canadian media -- examines US MSM coverage and finds it lacking.
But readers may find it lacking that, in Danny's criticism, no one
appears to do anything. We never get the names of the ones called out.
CNN does a crappy interview and we're not told who with CNN did the
interview. We noted her Sunday: TV personality Atika Shubert disgraced
herself but don't look for CNN to discipline her, she did what
government officials wanted, attacked Julian Assange and turned a
supposed interview about WikiLeaks into a smear against his person with unfounded rumors. There's no whore like a corporate whore. Danny Shea (Huffington Post) has video of the character attack here. Katherina-Marie Yancy (AP) notes
the WikiLeaks documents demonstrate that the body count was far higher
than the US government admitted to -- the documents, remember, are US
military documents. That would mean, to say what the AP won't, the US
government lied. [. . .] Atika Shubert could have addressed that,
instead she wanted to go smutty, she wanted to go whory. It won't be
forgotten. News Whore Atika was too damn lazy to do the work required
for a real character assassination. Not only is she a whore, she's a
damn lazy whore. If someone's denied charges (that were dropped), you
either get the records or you get the witnesses. That's how you do a
character assassination. But apparently whores are very limited in the
number of tricks they can be taught. Atika Shubert just destroyed her
image today. There will be no rebuilding of it. She will not be trusted
by large numbers of the public. CNN will have to use her 'sparingly'.
Not because they doubt she'll whore for them, she so obviously will. But
she's now a known whore. We've all seen her whoring. She can't play
journalist now and be believed by many. Danny's far too kind to call
her a media whore but he still could name her. Danny calls out a story
in the New York Times which . . . apparently wrote itself? The bylines
Danny fails to provide: John F. Burns and Ravi Somaiya. A CJR piece
he calls out is easier to understand (the lack of billing) because it
has multiple authors; however, the section Danny's calling out was
written by Lauren Kirchner and a lot more from that article needs to be
called out. Is CJR receiving government funds or taking in government
embeds? That's especially a required question when we're dealing with
someone (Joel Meares) whoring for I-Hate-Iran Michael Gordon. The
report cannot accurately assert, as Gordo and Andrew W. Lehren claim,
where kidnapped victims were kidnapped unless they witnessed the
kidnapping. That's a basic of journalism and CJR should have caught
that. Instead they joined Gordo in his War On Iran by presenting a
claim as fact -- and they can't back it up.
When Julian exposed the US government lies about the Iraq War, he became a target and he's been one ever since.
Words like "treason" are tossed around by various US idiots. Julian Assange cannot committ treason against the United States, he is not a citizen of the United States. I grasp that words is hard for some -- especially the knee jerk reactionaries -- but you committ treason against your own country. Julian is a citizen of Australia.
He is persecuted. Ecuador is trying to shove him out of the embassy and into the handcuffs of the United States.
Julian is guilty of no crime -- putting the truth out in the public square is not a crime -- certainly not in what's supposed to be a democracy.
But the US wants to get their hands on him and disappear him.
If they have their way, he will be the only one the US government has gone after, prosecuted for the Iraq War.
Free Julian Assange and free him now.
